Dutch-American violinist Maren Bosma (1996) started her violin studies at age 7. From a young age she performed as a member of various youth orchestras, such as the Netherlands Youth String Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands. She was accepted into the Sweelinck Academy in Amsterdam in 2011 in the class of Lex Korff de Gidts, with whom she continued her studies and received her Bachelor’s degree in June 2017 from the Conservatory of Amsterdam, with a minor in Theory of Music. She received her Master of Music in Performance degree with Distinction in 2019 from the Royal College of Music in London, under the tutelage of Daniel Rowland and Gabrielle Lester. She is grateful to have received financial support from the RCM as a Joan Weller Scholar and a Winifred Law Award Holder, as well as having been financially supported in her studies by the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, the Fundatie Vrijvrouwe van Renswoude, the Niemeijer Fonds, and the Hendrik Muller Fonds.
Maren is the leader and Associate Artistic Director of the Bath Festival Orchestra. A demanded orchestral player, she has spent several summers at both the Aspen Music Festival and School (Colorado, USA) and the Pienza Music Festival in Italy, and has been a repeated guest artist at renowned international music festivals such as the Stift International Music Festival, Internationaal Kamermuziekfestival Schiermonnikoog, and Thy Chamber Music Festival (Denmark). She has additionally performed as concertmaster in various Dutch student orchestras, including the Netherlands Student Chamber Orchestra (Nesko) and the Netherlands Symphony Project, where she was lauded for her leading role in Mahler’s 4th symphony and Strauss’ Morgen. Maren has held concertmaster and principal positions in the Royal College of Music Symphony Orchestra and the RCM Opera Orchestra, performing under the baton of renowned conductors including Bernard Haitink, John Wilson, and Andrew Gourlay. She was the leader of the London-based Maconchy Quartet from 2017 to 2020, and is the leader, co-founder, and co-producer of the London-based ensemble Cat’s Cradle Collective.
Maren is a highly regarded performer of contemporary and undiscovered music, and takes particular interest in academic research. She was the youngest delegate and only Master student to be invited to the Audience Research in the Arts Conference in Sheffield (July 2019), where she presented her study on introductions and audience experience of musical performance.
